Jazz das Minas is black music celebrated through diversity in female power. A women-only circle of afro-samba-jazz. African rhythms, samba and jazz woven with elaborate arrangements, dipped in improvisation and poetry. Ancestrality seams with today’s freshness. “We play jazz because it’s free. Just like our bodies, skin, sex – and also music. We invent arrangements and subvert genres. In our set, we choose tunes that touch, free and reflect our place in the world,” explains Maíra Freitas, leader of the quintet and daughter of iconic samba singer and composer Martinho da Vila. Created in 2019, the musicians perform and improvise compositions by Maíra Freitas, as well as songs by Nina Simone, Fatima Guedes, Ivone Lara, Manu da Cuíca, Iara Ferreira and Ana Terra. The show also includes pieces that dialogue with the quintet’s universe, like Gilberto Gil, Milton Nascimento and hits sung by Elza Soares, Beth Carvalho, Alcione, Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday.
